When Doreen Waideman moved into BaptistCare Moonya Aged Care Home in Manjimup WA two years ago, everybody assumed it was the end of the avid tennis fan’s weekly hit out with friends.
But the fabulously fit 85-year-old has continued her traditional Tuesday game with best friends Kaye Edwards (85), Helen Court (79) and Karen Church (76).
The lively quartet spend a solid two and a half hours on Kaye’s home tennis court, proving you are never too old to live an active lifestyle.
Doreen whose been playing tennis since the age of 22, said her weekly games keep her healthy and help her remain connected to friends that don’t live at Moonya.
“Not only does tennis keep me fit, but it’s a lot of fun,” she said.
“It’s a great hobby and one that I am glad I can still share with Helen, Kaye and Karen.”
Keeping active has always been a significant part of Doreen’s life.
The octogenarian grew up playing basketball and even had a go at golf in her twenties.
BaptistCare Lifestyle Coordinator, Danni Roberts, said that Doreen busts the myth that once you move into residential aged care your passions and hobbies end.
“Doreen is a great example of doing what you love regardless of your age,” she said.
“At Moonya, we love to support residents to pursue their sporting and cultural interests including those that take residents out into the community.”
Aside from her weekly tennis adventures, the Great Grandmother Doreen has taken on the job of walking Moonya’s beloved Cocker Spaniel Lucky.
