Leading as a non-anxious presence - with Kelly Crawford
Club Room
In his groundbreaking leadership book, A Failure of Nerve, Edwin Friedman stated,
“before any technique or data could be effective, leaders have to be willing to face their own selves...to the extent leaders of any family or institution are willing to make a lifetime commitment to their own continual self-regulated growth, they can make any leadership theory or technique look brilliant. And conversely, to the extent that they avoid that commitment, no theory or technique is likely to succeed for very long (pgs. 22-23).”1
In this taster, we will use constructs from Bowen Family Systems Theory to explore:
- differentiation-of-self in leadership and what prevents us from becoming differentiated
- triangulation and why we do it (reinforcing Rachael Robertson’s session)
- the markers of a chronically anxious system
- what happens when a well-differentiated leader shows up as a non-anxious presence in a chronically anxious system
If you are interested in lifting your understanding of leadership to the emotional system you operate in, this taster is for you!
Multipliers and accidental diminishers - with Michelle Barletta
Pioneers Room
Have you ever wondered why some leaders create a positive impact on their teams whilst others don’t? According to Liz Wiseman’s book Multipliers, this could be less to do with luck and more to do with letting go of simple things we do accidentally. Wiseman believes there are attributes of Multipliers who amplify the results of people around them as opposed to some well-intentioned Diminishers who reduce other results.
Picture this: You are a kind-hearted leader who regularly steps in to solve a problem for a team member. You think you are helping; after all, it was your ability to help others that got you noticed and promoted. In this session, we will explore how this simple act of helping could be limiting or diminishing your team.
This session will explore both diminisher tendencies and how we can reduce them with some small tweaks, and how we can use multiplying behaviours to be an effective leader and have a team that is firing!
Embrace Resilience and avoid burnout. Put your own oxygen mask on first! - with FireUp
Norman Lindsay Room
To lead through adversity, we all need to take time out of our day to reflect and ask how we can improve our resilience as leaders.
We’ll be sharing research by Nick Petrie, a Harvard master and coach who spent 10 years at the Centre for Creative Leadership, where he conducted research with over 1,000 senior leaders around the world on how they manage their personal resilience to build a healthy, high-performance culture that doesn't burn people out.
During this session you will:
- Reflect on your own personal resilience
- Learn simple & practical tools that you can use for yourself and your people
