What happens when you are ready to downsize, but don’t want to trade in your lifestyle? The answer for Alva Currie was to move into Baptistcare Yallambee Retirement Village.

Alva Currie discovered Yallambee Retirement Village, which is in the heart of Mundaring, 17 years ago when she popped in to visit a friend.

“From the moment I drove in and saw an avenue of green I thought it was just beautiful,” said Alva.

“I decided to say goodbye to my much-loved quarter acre block, which I was finding difficult to maintain, and make the move before I became too elderly.”

Alva loves the fact that Yallambee Village is surrounded by native plants and trees.

A keen gardener, she spends much of her time nurturing the garden around her unit, which is brimming with flowers and greenery.

Being able to keep up her passion for gardening is important for this green thumb who studied horticulture and worked with the Wildflower Society
of WA.

“I keep busy pruning, planting and digging. I even tend to some of the communal plants which add to the feeling that you are living in a sanctuary.”

It was also a social visit to Yallambee that prompted John Steward to move into the Baptistcare retirement village after living in the hills for 25 years.

“After living on a six-acre bushland block in Stoneville, surrounded by grasstrees, kangaroos and birdlife, I wasn’t sure how I could retain the same sense of nature and privacy in retirement if I had to move to the city,” said John.

“Here at Yallambee it feels as if you have plenty of space, yet there’s always someone to chat to when you feel like some company.”

John enjoys riding his bike around Mundaring to take in the stunning natural scenery and indulges in one of his favourite hobbies which is bird watching.

While not as keen about gardening as Alva, John has a low maintenance rock garden in which he has planted some native species to attract feathered friends.

Although tucked away in its special bushland setting, Baptistcare Yallambee is close to local cafes, shops, parks, chemists and medical centres, and has public transport right on its doorstep.

Residents can enjoy their privacy or join social gatherings and activities held at Yallambee’s clubroom featuring a library, kitchenette and BBQ.

Lease for life units at Yallambee Village start from $199k.
