Keeping the mind, body and senses active enhances wellbeing. Activities give your loved one a sense of accomplishment, usefulness and purpose, which can boost their dignity and self-esteem. Engaging people living with dementia in fulfilling activities can also help them have fun and stay socially connected. Studies show being active may even slow the progression of dementia.
When planning dementia activities for your loved one, consider:
When taking your loved one out, avoid noisy, crowded places like large shopping centres, as they can be overwhelming. Encourage them to participate in activities without pressure and focus on their abilities, not limitations. Like all of us, they will have good and bad days. Observe what upsets them and note what calms them when distressed.
Activities can be planned, self-initiated, or spontaneous. In addition to scheduling regular activities, create an environment with visible ‘half-done’ tasks like socks to sort, a cloth to wipe the table, or a partially completed jigsaw puzzle. These cues prompt independent activity.
Keep simple options in mind for when your loved one appears withdrawn, bored, or agitated. Options might include taking a walk together, listening to music, brushing their hair, giving a massage, or playing games using an app like A Better Visit.
