BaptistCare is pleased to announce the upcoming expansion of its Community Food Hub in Adelaide's CBD, made possible by a State Government investment to help individuals and families put food on the table through a new Social Supermarket Program.
Thanks to a share in a $2.8 million investment, more South Australians facing the rising cost-of-living will be able to access affordable food and everyday essentials with dignity and choice.
BaptistCare's Community Food Hub, located next to the WestCare Centre in the heart of the city, offers low-cost groceries with free fruit, vegetables and bread for every purchase. No referral is required – just an eligible concession card. People can shop at their own pace and connect to further support if and when they need it.
The State Government funding will enable the Hub to open its doors to more people – from pensioners stretching their budgets to workers struggling with rising costs – with a wider range of fresh produce and culturally diverse food options on offer.
Senior Manager Community Pathways Philip Bunyon said the investment would make a real difference for people in the community.
“This funding from Minister Cook and the State Government is great news for our ability to serve South Australians doing it tough,” he said.
“Expanding our social supermarket in the CBD will allow us to reach more people facing cost-of-living pressures and provide dignified access to nutritious food in a central, accessible location. This investment recognises that food security isn't just about charity, it's about community wellbeing.”
Human Services Minister Nat Cook said social supermarkets play an important role in strengthening both food security and community wellbeing.
"Social supermarkets offer a dignified, practical response by providing affordable food alongside pathways to support, connection and participation," she said.
"This investment ensures those services can continue to grow where they're needed most."
BaptistCare looks forward to welcoming more South Australians through the doors of its Community Food Hub in the months ahead. The expansion also opens exciting opportunities for local partnerships and community collaboration, as well as more ways for volunteers to get involved and give back.
