BaptistCare is excited to announce the publication of two very important pillars of our social sustainability framework: our Human Rights Position Statement and our first Modern Slavery Statement.
Our purpose and intent for our Human Rights Position Statement (and our connected Modern Slavery Statement), is stated in the first few lines of our Human Rights Position Statement:
“We endeavour to enhance the lives of all individuals with whom we connect, as we transform lives by expressing the love of Christ. We recognise that we have a critical role to play in promoting and respecting human rights, and identifying and addressing any human rights issues in our workforce and supply chain. We commit to the betterment of the lives of the community we serve and all our stakeholders by adhering to ethical policies that respect human rights and oppose exploitation.”
These two important documents have been developed to frame and articulate BaptistCare’s position on these matters subsequent to the introduction of the Commonwealth Modern Slavery Act in 2018.
“These documents mark an important milestone in the history of BaptistCare. They articulate our strong desire and willingness to promote and respect human rights and adhere to ethical policies that respect human rights and oppose exploitation. They also guide us in how we may begin to mitigate any exploitation of human rights in our supply chain”, said Meighan Heard, BaptistCare General Manager, Governance & Legal.
“This represents a significant body of work that is underscored by our Christian principles that every human being is of value, equal, unique and loved by God”, said Meighan.
“BaptistCare embraces the opportunity to join with other Australian businesses to eradicate modern slavery from our operations and supply chains,” said CEO Charles Moore.
“Through our Human Rights Position Statement, we commit to the betterment of the lives of the community we serve and all stakeholders. We also commit to promote the human rights of those in our care, to promote a culture of respect for human rights in our workforce, and to refrain from any business activities that could be complicit in human rights abuses.
“Any form of modern slavery is unacceptable and does not reflect the Christian beliefs upon which BaptistCare was founded. As an organisation dedicated to the care of people in vulnerable situations, we carry a weight of responsibility to protect the vulnerable, and actively pursue the eradication of modern slavery, both locally and globally”, said Charles.
