There’s a good reason why lawn bowls is so popular in retirement – or many good reasons if you ask the social bowlers at Baptistcare Riverside Retirement Village in Salter Point.

On Monday afternoons you’ll find up to 16 residents on the village’s private bowling green, all making the sport part of a fun and active retirement.

Some are experienced bowlers and members of local bowling clubs, but the majority are newcomers to the game.

Among them are Clem Gannon and his wife Lyn, both “sports-mad” 70-somethings who have added lawn bowls to a busy calendar that already includes tennis and golf.

“Lawn bowls is much more interesting and stimulating than you might first think; there’s a lot more to it,” Mr Gannon said.

Mr Gannon says the Monday afternoon sessions at Baptistcare Riverside are an opportunity for an informal catch-up with plenty of good-natured competition, lots of chat and a glass of wine at the end of the afternoon.

“As well as being a social activity, with people of different skills levels coming together to play, it’s also providing exercise, plus you’re out in the fresh air,” Mr Gannon said.

The Baptistcare Riverside resident bowlers are very proud of their four-rink bowling green and have been getting together with retirees from other villages for some light-hearted competition and socialising.

“In the whole time I’ve been here I’ve not met anyone who says they don’t enjoy living here,” Mr Gannon said.

A handful of two-bedroom and three-bedroom apartments are currently available at Baptistcare Riverside.
