Mothers should be celebrated and the team at George Forbes House in Queanbeyan did just that recently when they put on a lovely Mother’s Day High Tea which was enjoyed by residents, staff and family members alike.

Residents enjoyed sipping tea from beautiful floral patterned china tea cups, in a beautifully decorated room with a balloon archway, a trolley of sweet treats and a wall of flowers that spelt out "Happy Mother's Day".

There was also a pancake stand, lots of varieties of cakes and fairy floss. A highlight of the event was jazz musician Wayne Kelly, who played popular jazz songs which created a wonderful atmosphere. This the first time that George Forbes House has had a live musician back inside the centre since COVID-19 began last year.

Comments from residents included, "An amazing time had by all, the jazz musician was outstanding" and "beautiful decorations and gifts".

George Forbes House Residential Manager Rachael Smith said it was a wonderful day:

"It was fantastic to see the team pull together to make Mother’s Day extra special for our lovely residents. We had our first live entertainer since the start of COVID-19 which the residents thoroughly enjoyed. The lifestyle team were inventive, collaborative and instilled a buzz around the home that was infectious."

Mothers are so central and integral in a person’s life that many poets over the years have written about mothers, including this poem below, written by Robert Louis Stevenson.

"To My Mother"

You too, my mother, read my rhymes
For love of unforgotten times,
And you may chance to hear once more
The little feet along the floor.

- Robert Louis Stevenson, 1850-1894
