It was a birthday to remember for Filomena Hodgkin who lives at Baptistcare Moonya Residential Care in Manjimup.
A card from the Queen and a party at Baptistcare Moonya were highlights of Filomena’s 100th birthday. But even well wishes from Her Majesty couldn’t compete with the birthday card that arrived from the centenarian’s beloved West Coast Eagles football team.
Watching every home and away game on television during the AFL season is a favourite pastime for the ‘super fan’ who has followed the club since they started back in 1986.
Born in Fremantle to an Italian migrant family, Filomena was one of eight children.
She married her husband George in 1946 and the couple moved to Northcliffe where they went on to create a large and happy family of their own.
With eight children, 17 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild, Filomena’s family could field two football teams themselves and still have a couple of reserves on the bench.
“I definitely believe having the love of a large and wonderful family is the key to a long life,” said Filomena.
“That and having three sugars in my tea every day.”
Baptistcare Lifestyle Coordinator, Angelina Reeve, said Filomena loved her milestone birthday celebration which was shared with family and the many friends she has made at Baptistcare Moonya Residential Care.
“The only thing that could have topped her birthday festivities would have been a visit from her favourite West Coast player, Luke Shuey,” she said.
“But she’s not giving up hope and says there’s always next year.”
