When Gail Kerr heard one of BaptistCare Maranoa’s Stage One apartments had re-entered the market, she knew it was perfect timing. She bought it, moved in mid February, and has never doubted her decision.

“My husband suddenly passed away last July. I couldn’t stay in our house. I was going to give it 12 months, but I had to move. I kept looking out the back, thinking he would come around the corner any minute,” said Gail.

“And then this apartment came up and I thought, that’s it, I’m going to take it. I’ve definitely made the right choice. There has never been any doubt in my mind since the moment I walked in here and said, ‘Yes, I’ll have this place.’”

Gail and her husband, Greg, had actually visited BaptistCare Maranoa Retirement Village and talked with Kylie when the initial groundwork for the apartments had started. “When we got home, Greg said ‘I’m just not ready yet’. So I said, ‘Oh well, maybe we’ll be ready for the second release.’”

Gail and Greg had shared a love for Alstonville for over a decade. They particularly admired its village atmosphere. “We came up from Coffs Harbour in 2010. We looked at buying in Alstonville then. However, we ended up with a block of land at Cumbalum and built our house there.”

During isolation, Gail was still able to walk down to get her groceries, cautious, drawing on her nursing background. She’s been delighted as the community reopens.

“People are very friendly here. I love the sense of community, and the proximity to Coles and coffee shops and restaurants. It’s all so close. I’m also close to family, my daughter and son-in-law are just ten minutes away,” said Gail.

“I’m still happy driving down to Ballina. I’m a member of the Probus Club. Today was the first day back playing croquet down there. Another lady from croquet also lives here and we visit each other.”
