Like everything they do in life, former WWII fight pilot James Baker (97), and his wife Marie (96), lined up for a COVID-19 vaccine on Thursday, 25 February 2021 together.

The couple who has been married for 74 years live at BaptistCare’s Gracehaven Residential Aged Care.

They were side by side as they became among the first seniors in Rockingham to receive the Pfizer vaccine.

Mr Baker said it was important for older Australians to receive the COVID-19 vaccine first as they are more vulnerable and need extra protection.

BaptistCare CEO, Russell Bricknell, said the leading aged care provider was experiencing high rates of requests for the vaccine across its 12 residential care facilities.

“It is pleasing to see so many residents wanting to receive the jabs as soon as they have become available,” he said.

“Facilitating the rollout of the vaccines on-site at our facilities is another way we can keep the people in our care safe and healthy.”

BaptistCare Gracehaven resident Betty Roe (87) also received her jab today.

Mrs Roe, who moved to Rockingham 60 years ago, said she was grateful for the vaccine and felt all seniors should be protected against COVID-19.

“The staff here at Gracehaven have done a wonderful job of keeping us happy and well during the pandemic, and it has felt like the safest place to be,” she said.
