Spring had truly sprung, giving us a beautiful day for a visit from the WA Vintage Car Association at Baptistcare Morrison Gardens in Midland.
Recently, Baptistcare Morrison Gardens held a Great Gatsby themed week for residents, with the main event on the last day certainly not one to miss – a visit from the WA Vintage Car Association, whose members brought along nine vintage and classic cars for display! Dressed up for the occasion in feather boas, tassles, pin stripes and bowler hats, the residents enjoyed a barbecue lunch before having the opportunity to chat about the cars with the owners, with some getting to peek under the bonnet at the restored engines and machinery.
The members from the WA Vintage Car Association welcomed the Morrison Gardens residents along for an afternoon drive to Fishmarket Reserve, on the banks of the Swan River. One after the other in a line of vintage and classic cars, the group cruised through Midland with the windows down and the radios up! They even passed by a group of school children on an outing who were very excited to see the cars, waving and calling out to the residents and drivers.
Before getting into one of the cars, one resident was overheard talking about how similar the vehicle was to one he had driven on a date with a woman many years ago – a very successful date, as that woman became his wife!
As the group drove away, Baptistcare Morrison Gardens’ Lifestyle Coordinator Carla Rowe explains that you could see the grins on the residents’ faces from a mile away, saying, “That sight gives you an overwhelming feeling in your heart, knowing that you have given your residents something so meaningful and purposeful. To help them reminisce about their past, and happy memories, and help them to relive it in a small way. It’s the best feeling in the world.”
The residents weren’t the only ones to dress up – Carla and the team at Morrison Gardens also donned their Great Gatsby inspired outfits, complete with one of the Therapy and Leisure Partners, Lindie, dressing up as a cigarette girl, taking inspiration from the iconic women of the 1920s, though her tray was full of snacks and party treats from the 2020s instead!
The week-long event was well received by the residents at the Midland aged care facility, with much excited and enthusiastic chatter overheard in the dining room each evening and well into the weekend that followed.
