After walking out of prison six months ago, James*, 55, had nothing but a plastic bag of possessions and a promise to himself: “I was never going back to jail.”
Years lost to addiction and isolation weighed heavily on him. Finding a job was nearly impossible with his record, and rising rent meant food was often out of reach. Alone and struggling, James faced a tough reality: staying straight was harder than he imagined.
That’s where HopeStreet stepped in. Offering support, dignity, and a sense of community, HopeStreet became a lifeline for James and many others. Every Friday, the free BBQ draws around 140 people - blokes rebuilding their lives, elderly men coping with loss, families doing it tough, and people sleeping rough. No judgement, just a warm welcome and a sausage sandwich with extra onions.
“They didn’t see a loser. They just saw a hungry bloke who needed a feed... here, everybody’s welcome. Even me.” Says James.
The BBQ isn’t just about food. It’s about belonging. Staff and volunteers remember James’ name and his favourite toppings. Regulars save him a meal if he’s running late. For the first time in years, James felt seen. “For the first time in years, I didn’t feel invisible,” says James.Even when he shared his past, no one stepped back - only kindness and acceptance.
“Everyone here’s gone through hard times, mate. You want another sausage?”
HopeStreet’s support goes beyond the BBQ. Nutritious hot café meals and affordable frozen dinners mean James no longer has to choose between food and housing. Strong community ties make all the difference. “You’re funding second chances. You’re building a community.”
James’ story is proof that generosity can transform lives. By supporting HopeStreet, you give more than food - you give family, friendship, and hope.
