Eight residents at BaptistCare Wingara Hamlet in Springwood took up their knitting needles between September 2019, creating 350 ‘Police blue’ poppies for officers to wear in memory of fallen colleagues.
Betty O’Grady, one of our much-loved Wingara Hamlet tenants, came up with the idea of the ‘Police blue’ poppy when discussing Remembrance Day with her son, Sergeant O’Grady.
Our champion knitters were honoured at a special morning tea hosted by the Traffic and Highway Patrol at their headquarters in Huntingwood, NSW in September, and the knitted poppies adorned some 300 officers, dignitaries and invited guests during a Police Remembrance Day Memorial Service held in October.
Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy APM expressed “deep gratitude to the ladies for what they had done and how much we appreciate their personal contribution to Police Remembrance Day.”
