Level 2 Home Care Package

Scroll to Explore

Have you just qualified for a level 2 package under the Federal Government’s Home Care Packages Program?

Older Australians overwhelmingly want to live in their own homes for as long as possible. The Federal Government is helping to facilitate this through the Home Care Package program. This involves providing recipients with subsidised care services at a level that matches their needs.

If you’ve recently been assessed for a level 2 package, you’ll have lots of questions. What does your package entitle you to? And what kinds of services might you be able to access?

The government provides four levels of Home Care packages to reflect the different needs of older people living in the community.

Level 2 is the third highest level of care available and is assigned to people that the government has assessed to have ‘lower-level’ needs. (By contrast, Level 4 packages are for those with high-level care needs.)

On a level 2 care package, your yearly subsidy entitles you to up to approximately $14,500 toward products and services* that support your care.

As long as you go through an approved provider, you’re entirely free to choose which services you spend your subsidy on. This subsidy can be used to access services from approved Home Care providers, such as BaptistCare.

One thing to consider is that you might be required to pay a small co-payment depending on your own income level. Please talk with us about how that works and if it applies to you.

Given your lower level of needs, some of the areas you might consider include:

  • Personal care
  • Domestic assistance
  • Meal preparation
  • Shopping
  • Transport
  • Social engagements
  • Pursuit of your hobbies
  • Companionship

You may be finding that cooking dinners and lunches is tiring you out and you might want some support with meal preparation. Or you might be struggling with cleaning the bathroom and kitchen and choose domestic assistance. Perhaps you’re finding it difficult to attend church or your club and want some help with transport. The choice is yours.

Bear in mind that you can always make additional payments to access services that you would like to access that aren’t covered by your current Home Care package.

There is often a waiting period between when your home care package has been approved, and when it is allocated (assigned to you and funds transferred to your chosen provider). It’s during this time that you can select the provider that matches your needs.
