The evolution of community housing in Newcastle

Four years ago, BaptistCare acquired three small retirement villages from Newcastle City Council, located in the suburbs of New Lambton and Jesmond.

In January 2020, BaptistCare Carinya Court (9 units), BaptistCare Allambie Court (22 units including an additional 12 units developed as part of the Social and Affordable Housing Fund) and BaptistCare Kiah Court (10 units) were all converted to community housing.

All these units have been operating as affordable rental housing for seniors for many years and the change to community housing better reflects the service being provided without losing any of the benefits of a retirement village.

Our communing housing for seniors aims to maximise a tenant’s independence and choice by supporting their overall wellbeing through access to support services, social engagement and connection to the broader community.
