Yallambee Residential Care choir bring harmony to Harmony Week. A group of musically-minded residents got together to form the Mundaring Songbirds.

A group of senior Mundaring songbirds are ready to bring their own brand of harmony to Harmony Week, demonstrating the power of inclusivity, respect and a sense of belonging.

The 15-strong Songbirds have been spreading the joy at Baptistcare Yallambee Residential Care in Mundaring since a group of its musically-minded residents got together in 2017.

The senior song group, who especially love belting out Elvis classics, will take to the Yallambee stage this week, performing to residents as part of their Harmony Week celebrations.

Embodying the Harmony Week theme ‘Everybody Belongs’ the Songbirds are a prime example of how music can bring people together, regardless of age, background or experiences.

The group includes several residents well into their 90s and a number of residents journeying with dementia. All look forward to the weekly rehearsals run by Baptistcare volunteers Margaret Bacon and pianist Wendy Harper.

Music has long been a part of life at Baptistcare Yallambee, both as a popular recreational activity and a way to support residents’ health and wellbeing, reducing stress, agitation, anxiety and depression.

According to the Mayo Clinic* research suggests that listening to or singing songs can provide emotional and behavioural benefits for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.

Musical memories are often preserved in Alzheimer’s disease because key brain areas linked to musical memory are relatively undamaged by the disease.
