Why work in aged care?

The aged care sector is one of the fastest-growing industries, with the number of older Australians requiring care set to double by the year 2050.

The industry is calling out for caring, compassionate people to serve this booming aged population, and in return, it offers long-term job security, career progression, and the opportunity to make a genuine difference in people’s lives.

We spoke with BaptistCare talent acquisition partner, Rebecca Sidrak to learn about the main draw factors for job seekers in the aged care sector.

What different kinds of aged care work can I do?

In Australia, there are two main types of aged care services:

1. Home care

Home care workers look after older people in and around their own homes. They provide one on one personal care like washing, dressing, and toileting, or domestic duties like preparing and serving a meal, cleaning, or doing the laundry. Home care workers also provide transport for their clients to get to and from appointments.

2. Residential aged care

Residential care workers support people who live in an aged care facility, sometimes referred to as a nursing home. Working as part of a team, they take care of elderly residents who commonly have higher care needs than those living at home, for example, those living with advanced dementia.

What skills do I need to be an aged care worker?

To work with elderly people, you will need to be kind, compassionate, and have a genuine, caring interest in your clients.

Providing companionship is an important part of aged care.

What qualifications do I need to be an aged care worker?

Your pathway into residential aged care or home care services might look different depending on which avenue of work you choose.

Residential care

If you choose to work in residential care, you’ll need a minimum of a Certificate III in Individual Support or equivalent (CHC33015), with some facilities offering paid traineeships to support you in obtaining this qualification (see below).

Home care

Most home care service providers do not require their staff to hold a qualification. At BaptistCare for example, we provide all the training you need. We just ask that you have your own insured vehicle, a valid driver’s licence, and a positive, caring attitude.

As you grow and develop throughout your career, you can gain further qualifications in aged care such as Certificate IV in Ageing Support (CHC43015), or an Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management (CHC62015).

Traineeships

If you’re keen to get started but aren’t yet qualified, you can start your career with a fully funded traineeship, supporting you to obtain your Certificate III in Individual Support.

BaptistCare is very proud to be the first aged care provider in NSW to offer such a program, giving eligible applicants the opportunity to undertake our traineeship through TAFE NSW via a supported, online course, complemented by fully supervised on-the-job training.

“It’s all about creating more inclusive pathways into aged care,” says Rebecca.
