BaptistCare Watermark has partnered with the local Riverina Community College to deliver Café Maison, a viable solution beyond a commercial café here onsite.

The village has a beautiful commercial kitchen from a previous restaurant that operated quite some years ago. The residents used the space for gatherings.

I rang around and found the College was looking for a space for their hospitality courses. It was quite easy to get the existing kitchen up and running with everything already in place from commercial ovens and rangehoods, to coffee machine and fridge.

Café Maison is in operation two days a week. On a Monday, from 9.30am to 11.30am, residents access a fresh range of coffee, tea and cake. On Tuesdays, they put their names down for a full lunch.

Last Tuesday, we feasted on a nice quiche and salad, and cheesecake with berry coulis. It was delicious. The chef who is running the course is a very accomplished local chef so we are very lucky.

It’s been an exercise that has brought the residents together, both in the preparation stage and now to enjoy a coffee or meal at the same table. There was increased activity around the village from the start. The residents came together to help prepare the kitchen before the college came.

The current set-up is scheduled to run through to Easter next year.
