Physiotherapists at Baptistcare David Buttfield Centre Residential Care in Gwelup have noticed some surprising results while putting a group of 80-somethings through their paces in the gym.

Not only are participants building strength, but the men are also striking up new friendships because of the DBC Super Circuit sessions.

With typically fewer men than women in aged care, it can be more difficult for male residents to build friendships with other men.

But with the sessions attracting a band of regulars, it’s worked as an ice breaker, opening the door to conversations about their shared fitness experience and coffee catch-ups after class.

The Super Circuit has been so popular, residents are now asking to join in other exercise and movement classes.

Exercises are designed to build the strength needed to maintain independence with everyday tasks, such as dressing, showering and getting around.

Residents report feeling stronger, steadier and more mobile.
