Loneliness can pose a significant risk in older age, especially around Christmas. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, around 20 per cent of older Australians experience social isolation, with the rates increasing during the festive season.
If this is you, the idea of making new friends or trying out a new activity might seem overwhelming – particularly if you have reduced mobility and rely on others for support.
Research shows, however, that staying socially active in older age is key to living a longer and happier life. Seniors who are more socially involved are at decreased risk of heart disease, illness, high blood pressure, and mental deterioration.

Yes, it can. If you have an active Home Care Package (HCP), or Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP), you can access a heavily subsidised daily rate, which includes meals, transport, and care.
If you don’t have a home care package, that’s okay. You can still join your local social club and pay privately for your membership.
