Understanding Home Care and how it’s changing

The Australian Government has changed in-home care to make it easier for you to access services and manage funding for your care. 

The new Support at Home program (SaH) began on 1 November, 2025. It has replaced the Home Care Packages (HCP) Program and is part of the new Aged Care Act, which puts the right of older people first. 

The Home Care services you receive remain the same - government-subsidised support to help you continue living independently in your own home. 

Whether it’s a bit of extra help with getting the groceries home and packed away, nursing care to manage a health concern, or someone to mow the lawn, home care provides a wide array of services, all tailored to suit you.

Who is eligible for Home Care?

You'll be eligible for subsidised Home Care services in Australia if you are:

• An older person who needs coordinated services to help you stay at home – perhaps you’ve had a recent change in circumstances that have led you to explore what support might be available to you.
• Over the age of 65 (50 years or older for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people).
• A younger person with a disability, dementia or other care needs not met through other specialist services.
