The NSW Police Band delivers an unforgettable surprise for residents

Thursday 5 February started like any other morning at BaptistCare Bethshan Gardens Centre aged care home in Wyee on the NSW Central Coast – until police officers walked into the main hall, followed by a security guard with a firearm.

Residents froze. "What's going on?" someone asked, puzzled.

Then came the surprise. Confusion melted into smiles as the NSW Police Band unpacked their instruments and prepared to perform.

The surprise had been six months in the making. Lifestyle Coordinator Sally had submitted the application hoping to show residents a different side of the police, one beyond duty calls and roadside breath tests.

"I wanted residents to see that they're also approachable and human," Sally explained.

Pulling off the performance was no small feat. 30 band members arrived in convoy of a large truck, a 22-seater bus, and personal vehicles, setting up in the morning ahead of the show. By 11am, the hall had been transformed into a concert space buzzing with anticipation.

What followed was a high-energy performance from one of Australia’s oldest musical institutions. The NSW Police Band, which has been performing for more than 130 years, delivered a lively mix of classical pieces, jazz favourites, with a vocalist brought the timeless charm of Sinatra to life.

One resident summed it up perfectly, “Sally, once again congratulations. The end result was a recital everyone thoroughly enjoyed. Bring them again soon!”

Afterwards, residents and performers shared tea, cake, and warm conversation. The band praised the venue and hospitality, saying they were grateful for the opportunity to be part of the community for the day.

For Sally, moments like these are really special and personal to her. "I love surprising the community," she said. "It gives people something to look forward to, helps them feel less isolated, and brings a little bit of novelty to their day."
