Father's Day celebration strikes a chord at Gracewood

There were smiles, applause and widespread delight at BaptistCare Gracewood aged care home in Kellyville, NSW, when the Samuel Gilbert Primary School Concert Band from nearby Castle Hill paid a special Father's Day visit to residents.

The talented 36-piece band, led by teacher and band master Mrs Heather Skinner, performed nine songs for residents, creating a joyful atmosphere filled with music and community spirit. Made up of Year 4, 5 and 6 students, the band impressed residents not only with their performance but also with their dedication, with most students having learned their instruments for just a year and a half.

Before the concert began, the students took time to create handwritten Father's Day cards for the home's male residents. In a wonderful coincidence, there were exactly 36 concert band students and 36 fathers, grandfathers and male residents at Gracewood.

The thoughtful cards featured heartfelt messages and colourful drawings that brought plenty of smiles to residents' faces. One particularly enthusiastic card proclaimed "WALTER IS THE BEST!" in giant capital letters across the front. The handmade cards were presented to residents at a lunch alongside special Father's Day gifts prepared by the Gracewood team, making the occasion even more meaningful for the residents being honoured.

Honouring fathers and grandfathers

The celebration began with reflections from BaptistCare team member Julia, who spoke about the important role fathers and grandfathers play in families and communities. Julia read a Psalm from the Bible and also a poem about fathers. Her words honoured the residents in the room while also recognising the legacy of those who came before them.

Residents then settled in to enjoy an uplifting morning of music. Song after song was met with enthusiastic applause, culminating in cheers of "Bravo, bravo!" after the band's final performance.

A performance that lifted spirits

Speaking on behalf of residents, John thanked the students and teachers for creating such a memorable experience.

"That was a wonderful experience, thank you very much. We're all very impressed with your beautiful talent, and it lifted our spirits. Thank you all so very much."

The appreciation and connection felt throughout the room reflected the positive impact of the visit on everyone involved. Later in the morning, when John was wished a Happy Father's Day, he summed up the celebration perfectly.

"Well, it can't get any better than this. It's just wonderful."
