Creativity, compassion and community spirit are on proud display at Bethshan Gardens aged care home in Wyee, located on the Central Coast of NSW, where our resident knitting group has been making a meaningful difference – one stitch at a time.
Recently, the group donated a substantial collection of beautifully knitted items to Gosford Hospital, including blankets, teddies, baby items, beanies and scarves. These heartfelt gifts were distributed across the Children’s Ward, Special Care Nursery and Priority Populations services, supporting children, young people and families experiencing vulnerability.
The donation was warmly received by the Central Coast Local Health District, who sent a letter of thanks acknowledging the comfort these handmade items will bring to patients and families during challenging times
Inspired by the impact of their work, several residents expressed a desire to take the initiative even further. With a shared goal of raising funds to purchase more wool and resources, they began showcasing their handmade items for sale within the home.
Two simple display cabinets have now been installed in our main Reception, and since then, residents have been busy maintaining and restocking them. The response has been incredible – the cabinet even sold out last weekend. Knitted coat hangers have emerged as the surprise top-seller, and the enthusiasm from residents, staff and visitors alike has been wonderful to see.
More than just a fundraiser, this initiative has given residents a renewed sense of purpose, connection and joy, allowing them to continue a lifelong love of knitting while contributing to the wider community.
At Bethshan Gardens, it’s a beautiful reminder that small acts of kindness – lovingly made – can have a powerful impact.
